Russian River Grizzly Bears in Kenai Peninsula, Alaska
grizzly bears in the Russian River at Chugach National Forest, Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. The blonde bear in the album was the mom of the darker bears. She was killed by a scared fisherman who ran across the bears near the river. Blondie was ever vigilant and gentle with her cubs, but posed no threat to humans who kept a respectful distance. The man was later prosecuted for unnecessarily killing her. Public outrage was strong after news of the shooting appeared in the Anchorage newspaper. The bears wrestling in the water were the sons of Blondie a year later. The little "Blondie" sister fed and protected here brothers that year till they could feed themselves. Little Blondie is now a big brown grizzly and had to be moved miles away as she became a nuisance and over protective. My wife and I took these photos while camping in the National Forest at Russian River.
